Please help... since 1945 I have been fighting for my benefits!
I entered the war and was in WWII for several years. While in combat I was wounded in my eyes. I was blind for 4 months and was in the VA Hospital having them fixed in the Bronx NY. I tried to get my benefits since 1945 but the army never gave me the time of day. They told me they lost my records, they told me they would look into it etc. Years past and I really gave up. In 1999 I started the process again because I am now legally blind. I have only very partial vision in one eye. They now tell me that I was "Cross eyed" before the war! THIS IS totally untrue. I wore glasses but for farsightedness...nothing else. They also say I had night blindness! WHAT??? I never had night blindness... how could I even then drive a car before and after the war if I could not see at night! How could I be a Paratrooper? They are doing the same bologna that they did since 1945. They finally got back to me this week (I am 85) and tell me that after reviewing everything (Since 1999) they deny the claim noting the incorrect facts again because they say that is what is on the original documentation that they have before I went into the army. Because this "documentation" is obviously wrong all these years when some kid gave me the eye exam for the army... they deny me. They are just waiting for me to die since I am 85... so they can get rid of another headache. I was hurt in the eyes due to buzz bombs.
I am very upset about this all... my son is typing this for me and forwarding it to you. Please HELP! The claim number they gave me was XXXXXXXX. I tried to mail my NY Senators but they merely e-mail my son a generic letter. Anything you can do to point me in the right direction would be helpful. I e-mailed the DAV, the American Legion etc. but no one seems to care.
Thank you,
